Media Management Software
What Features should a Media Management Software support
There are many features a media management software should have or support. Whatever limitation the software might have, it can make or break your investment. For beginners, a good media management software should support a large number of file types or file extensions so to speak. Think not just .mp3 or .jpg, but also consider .doc or .pdf. But these are just the common file types everyone uses. Do you have your movies archived as avi’s or iso images (.iso)? If so, a media management software needs to support these file types as well.
A good media management software will also help you to prevent multi-filing. What is multi filing? Let’s assume you have exact copies of the same files in different locations. You do not want these exact copies show up as duplicates inside your archive. As long as the software keeps track of the different copies, all you should see on the surface is this specific file only once. Example: You have your music CDs saved as MP3’s on your hard drive. You have the different albums of a band as well as the “Best of” album which contains the same songs that are found on the other individual albums. This is where a solid multi-filing feature comes in handy to prevent duplicates “pollute” your database.
Media Management Software should also allow for flexibility when it comes to archiving and indexing your media files. A folder structure must be flexible enough to be changed to accommodate changes without losing your indexed data. There are certainly more features that each software offers, but these are the highlights for the moment.
