Media Management Software comes in three flavors. You can choose between SaaS (Software as a Service), self-hosted on the Internet, or as an on site installation on a local server or workstation. Choosing any online option will help you to save storage space and allow your clients, partners and employees to access files as they need them when they need them.

Choosing an offline option is more considered a stand-alone solution for your business alone and does usually not include sharing files with outside sources in any way. This type of setup is meant to provide a management solution that archives and indexes your files locally, with easy access and a track option so that you always where which file is.

SaaS Media Management Solutions are always commercial grade and are not cheap. However, they allow you to build a business model around this and “lease” files to clients for a fee or to work with graphic designers (just as an example) that are located around the world. You keep track of where a certain file is, who has it checked out – stuff like that. Make sure to check out each vendor’s offer in regards to features, pricing, and support.
